For this unit we will be studying 2 British horror films:
Both films were released in 2008.
Mark Kermode reviews Eden Lake here
Sightonsound provide a podcast review here
AIMS:
We will be focusing on what defines British horror. We will investigate the production of the 2 films using some of this information for FM2 Section A.
When studying the 2 horror films our ultimate concerns are narrative, themes and representation.
Kermode mentions The Final Girl concept in his review (Carol Clover) which will be useful in our study.
We will examine the representation and theme of children in the two films.
"Paedophobia" is a term used by Kermode and others to examine the fear of children present in such films.
We will use Andrew Tudor's narrative ideas about invasive threats and explore paranoid and secure horror narratives in order to understand these films further in relation to the genre of horror.
Through this investigation we will be asking ourselves "what makes a horror film?"
We will also be developing our understanding and appreciation of the 2 films as examples of British cinema.
